After five months of being tormented by anonymous notes, treats (Peaches and Cream Strudel…his favorite), gifts of peach-scented undergarments (a scent that reminded him of his love) appearing at his desk and on his doorstep, and being abducted by the new girl, Kirk had received word that his stalker Ava had been captured and arrested. The trial found that she had fixated on him because of their mutual love for Celeste, his work wife/best friend, who rebuffed her advances because she had fallen in love with him and they had just started trying to build their future together. Something inside of Ava was broken and she wanted him gone. She simply knew that with Kirk out of the picture, Celeste would lean on her in her time of need. To Ava, Kirk was just another man to add to her string of victims; men that Ava had claimed who, in her mind, always took the people and female figures in her life from her. She had been known along the coast as Demone Della Pesca (Peach Demoness) for her love of the smell of peaches, and how she’d leave them as her calling card before claiming her next victim. But when the abduction fell apart and she was captured, he thought that he was saved. The quiet and friendly but awkward new girl at work was finally out of his life in an institution seeking help where she belonged.
It took him another 6 months to feel safe and to gather the courage to leave his home after coming so close to losing his own life. Unbeknownst to him, Ava had escaped on the same night that Kirk was to go meet with a group of friends for the first time in ages. They were supposed to be going to a movie night camp out under the stars in the field by the town square. Taking a shortcut through the cemetery, he felt a chill up his spine and eyes on him. He turned on his flashlight and moved slowly, careful not to crush any dry leaves or anything giving away his position underfoot. Just as he thought he was in the clear, he tripped over a pile of old bones, screaming out! Falling back against the fountain he found these bones were no ordinary pile of bones. They had been fashioned into a heavier device that pinned him to his position.
As the night air grew cold, he could feel a presence behind him, cool breath blowing on his neck. He saw a slight shadow and felt a hand brush along his ear. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see the flint of bloody metal being flipped in the air. Frozen in place, he was terrified. He knew this night wouldn’t end well. As the mysterious figure leaned toward him and the familiar smell of peaches and cream wafted through the air, a creepy and angry whisper entered his ear. “She was mine,” the voice sobbed, “and you took herrrr from meeeee! You always take them from me!” There was no mistaking it. He knew it was Ava. Paralyzed with fear he silently prayed that somehow…he would find a way to escape before meeting his untimely end.
