Mrs. Claus Tempts the List…

Mr. & Mrs. Claus are very thorough in how the determine who does and doesn’t make the Naughty list for grown ups.  I mean after all…they have to know what “really” qualifies as Naughty before they can say you’re naughty.

So, Mrs. Claus, being as inquisitive as she was in her young age, came across a book of different things that led her to try to lead Mr. Claus to the naughty side.  By the looks of things, I think this how the elves were made… 😛

Phrases of Womanhood

Dedicated to Ntozake Shange

2018-11-01_015.png

Before I came to the grid, I had the opportunity to be the “Lady in Green” in a stage production of ‘For Colored Girls…’ put on by a group of my friends and I.  That book, choreopoem to be more accurate, was so revolutionary and life altering. It started to awaken part of me I didn’t even know lay dormant. In my journey of self-discovery, I had stumbled many times and tried to pick myself up.  In truth, I still struggle with many things I find wrong with myself. And I work on them slowly but surely as I am capable.  But every day I try to be a little bit more gentle with my psyche, my soul.  And handle myself with more tenderness than I used to.  I don’t always succeed, mind you. None of us really do.  But that struggle, that push…I feel like that the opening piece speaks to this in many ways in this magnificent piece of literature. This book it began to empower me in ways I didn’t know nor was I familiar with. It further helped me stay on the path to finding my voice.

Earlier this week, we lost the deliverer of this affirming message to women and it reminded me of the phases we go through as people, not just women.  But it also reminded me that I am very much a woman; a black woman who is learning to handle herself warmly…constantly working on not only writing the song of my life, but singing it every day to stay in the light.  So, I wanted to share this excerpt with you all because I love it so much.

“somebody / anybody
sing a black girl’s song
bring her out
to know herself
to know you
but sing her rhythms
carin/ struggle/ hard times
sing her song of life
she’s been dead so long
closed in silence so long
she doesn’t know the sound
of her own voice
her infinite beauty
she’s half-notes scattered
without rhythm/ no tune
sing her sighs
sing the song of her possibilities
sing a righteous gospel
let her be born
let her be born
& handled warmly.”
Ntozake Shange, an excerpt from “Dark Phrases” a poem from the book ‘for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf’
Rest in power, Queen Ntozake.

Waiting in the Corner…

2018-10-16_007

I was walking to my next rendezvous point and I thought the address was a tad shady. The setup: I was to seduce my mark and entrap him.  Everything was perfect: my hair, the clothing, my makeup…PERFECT.  But I digress. Something felt…off; way off.  This didn’t feel like any other assignment. There was a lingering of imbalance in the air.

2018-10-16_003

As I reached to grab the doorknob to enter the hotel, I heard a sound.  Nothing that a regular person would have detected, but a sound that was misplaced for this part of town.  I loudly opened the door and fake walked into the hotel so as to make it seem like I went inside, but went flush to the wall instead to stake out who was approaching; pistol loaded in case I needed to shoot…my hand covering the piece in case others walked past. The footsteps became heavier and slightly uneven in tone, suggesting this person had an injury.  A few more seconds and I’d know who was on my tail.  Until then, however, I’ll wait here in the corner until my prey is revealed.

Daydreaming

It took hours to perfect my makeup for the day.  And I have to say, my face was beat! And as much as I wanted to focus, my look of longing was misplaced.

2018-09-30_010.png

The photographer snapped a quickie of me but never said anything.  When I checked my phone there was a message of “what were you thinking about in this moment?”  The truth of the matter is, I don’t remember.  I wish I could…my mind simply wandered off.  Maybe it’s the weather, maybe the time and place; it could even be the ceremony; maybe it’s me missing my dance partner…I’m really not sure.

Saying Yes

2018-02-27_002.png

I am a people watcher. And in SL, I see more of what I saw IRL among the people here. A lot of us…we are all alike in many ways; especially in how we treat ourselves. It may manifest itself differently from person to person, but the base premise comes from the same place.  And while some revel in it and/or embrace it, some of us torture ourselves with it trying to find a way out…but not always succeeding. I often see so many of us say yes to the wrong things and the wrong people because of our inner struggles of saying yes to ourselves.

So many of us are so quick and able to give the most intimate parts of ourselves to others but then become incredibly stingy and hesitant to give those same gifts to ourselves.  Things like trust, awareness, time, affection, care, love, respect and validation; these are all things we tend to give in hopes of receiving them from others but are so quick to deny ourselves. We rationalize how if we have this person or that person or any person in our lives that we can only then be happy/feel complete/be whole.

But in the same vain, we’re also a people that will uplift and try to instill those same values in our friends who may be suffering as we are in hopes that they too don’t fall into that same pit we live in.  Not because we don’t want to be alone; but because we don’t always feel worthy of the things we give so freely to anyone else.

We say we don’t, but we do.  How do I know this? Because when a relationship of any kind (romantic/platonic/familial…you name it) ends, we always go down the list of all the things we did for that person, stating that they didn’t do the same for us. But do we ever stop and say, “maybe if I had recognized that I deserved all these things in the first place, I wouldn’t have allowed for this to happen to me?”  Probably not. And that’s where the say yes journey should begin.

And I don’t say this to sound like a jerk or bitter or anything that denotes anything other than reality.  We have to treat ourselves better. We have to look into ourselves and figure out who we are, what we want from ourselves and what we want FOR ourselves before we can inflict those expectations on someone else. We have to know who we are and what we really want so we know what we are willing to accept and put up with; what we truly deserve: happiness and fulfillment.  But it starts with looking at yourself honestly and starting to really strip away the layers to get to your inner emotional meatiness and then working on figuring out the rest.

I’ve been on this journey for a while now; learning more about who I am, what I like, what I don’t like, what I want, what I deserve and just what I’m willing to put up with in order to achieve it.  It’s been a hard journey and it gets lonely at times.  But by saying yes to myself, vowing to myself to view myself better and love myself better, I’ve been able to say yes to myself more instead of saying it to the wrong people, situations, ideas or things.

Just a little food for thought on this Wednesday afternoon.
