Phrases of Womanhood

Dedicated to Ntozake Shange

Before I came to the grid, I had the opportunity to be the “Lady in Green” in a stage production of ‘For Colored Girls…’ put on by a group of my friends and I.  That book, choreopoem to be more accurate, was so revolutionary and life altering. It started to awaken part of me I didn’t even know lay dormant. In my journey of self-discovery, I had stumbled many times and tried to pick myself up.  In truth, I still struggle with many things I find wrong with myself. And I work on them slowly but surely as I am capable.  But every day I try to be a little bit more gentle with my psyche, my soul.  And handle myself with more tenderness than I used to.  I don’t always succeed, mind you. None of us really do.  But that struggle, that push…I feel like that the opening piece speaks to this in many ways in this magnificent piece of literature. This book it began to empower me in ways I didn’t know nor was I familiar with. It further helped me stay on the path to finding my voice.

Earlier this week, we lost the deliverer of this affirming message to women and it reminded me of the phases we go through as people, not just women.  But it also reminded me that I am very much a woman; a black woman who is learning to handle herself warmly…constantly working on not only writing the song of my life, but singing it every day to stay in the light.  So, I wanted to share this excerpt with you all because I love it so much.

“somebody / anybody
sing a black girl’s song
bring her out
to know herself
to know you
but sing her rhythms
carin/ struggle/ hard times
sing her song of life
she’s been dead so long
closed in silence so long
she doesn’t know the sound
of her own voice
her infinite beauty
she’s half-notes scattered
without rhythm/ no tune
sing her sighs
sing the song of her possibilities
sing a righteous gospel
let her be born
let her be born
& handled warmly.”
Ntozake Shange, an excerpt from “Dark Phrases” a poem from the book ‘for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf’
Rest in power, Queen Ntozake.

Sunday Best

I remember watching Steel Magnolias and there’s this line where Anell (played by Daryl Hannah) got a bit fussy about what she was going to wear to church and Truvie (played by the incomparable Dolly Parton, STILL one of my faves) says to her, “God don’t care what you’re wearin’ long as you show up!”  That line always tickled me because there was a truth behind it.  God (or however you choose to address your higher power/guiding force) doesn’t care as long as you worship/praise in their name.

My mom would more than likely disagree with this one.  See, when I was little, my mom would send me off to church with my neighbors.  I would always get dressed in my Sunday best and she would give me a dollar to put in the offering plate, sometimes two. As I got older, I had stopped going for a long time until my mom at one point felt that I needed to go back and I didn’t have a choice in the matter. No, I wasn’t a juvenile delinquent or anything like that. I had just committed the cardinal sin of “losing my religion” before I was bound to the person I “gave my religion” to…legally. Anyway, at that age, my wardrobe was a bit more lax; but still respectful. Even if I had tried to wear jeans, she’d tell me no and change.  For her it wasn’t about showing out; moreso showing respect to your body and the house of the Lord. After all, if you couldn’t be respectful enough to dress up for your Savior, you must not have respect for self.

Lately, I’ve been missing my mom and little things she made me  do that I didn’t see the point of; one of which was showing up to church in your Sunday best.  So when I saw this dress, it made me think of that line and those moments when I would see all of the churchgoing ladies who get gussied up to simply go to church (or the grocery store or anywhere, really) and chuckled to myself as I put it on, getting ready for my Sunday.

It’s funny the little things are what I miss the most. Things that made no sense that , depending on the day and the level of noise in my head, make more sense now that I’m older.

Feeling Cute

I was racking my brain trying to figure out just how I was going to showcase this really cute dress.  I had a ton of ideas and none of them came to fruition.  Then it occurred to me to just shoot the dress in a simple shot.

The thing I love about this dress is that it’s classy but has that added sass all in the same breath.  The hemline is just short enough that you’re breaking some rules (ladies wear panties), but still gives off a classy air; especially with the off the shoulder top wrap. With a 12-color hud for each section (dress, belt and top wrap) and the possibilities are endless!  Add some cute heels and you’re ready to walk the runway, go clubbing or just plain strut out into the world looking hella cute! Head on over to the mainstore and grab this adorable frock!

How do we fall in love harder than a bullet could hit ya?
How do we fall apart faster than a hairpin trigger?

~ Bishop Briggs, “River”

I first heard this song in a choreography video of two kids from the Kinjaz Dojo dancing a Galen Hooks intensive and it’s stuck with me ever since.  It’s gloriously intense, sensual, provocative and powerful. And while the original video and song (of course) take my breath away, the choreography video featuring Galen Hooks’s dance just drives home the power of the beat and the beauty of the song. It’s actually what inspired the pose for this blog.  Now to go blast the song a few more times before bed. Ni ni all. 😉

Oh! Before I forget, here’s the choreo video I was talking about (not the kids’ one but the original one).

The Guests are Gone

The Guests are Gone

The party is over and the guests have all gone.  It was a beautiful party indeed.  There was one partygoer who left an impression.  It’s a shame to watch them leave.  Their form so beguiling and magnificent. I’ll have to have them back.  Maybe…maybe they’ll be more than a guest someday.
