Margaritas while hottubbing; what could be better? I’m sure I can think of something. Maybe I’ll find some Trouble to get into… *finds her phone and starts dialing* 😉

Sunday Best

2018-03-18_007.png

I remember watching Steel Magnolias and there’s this line where Anell (played by Daryl Hannah) got a bit fussy about what she was going to wear to church and Truvie (played by the incomparable Dolly Parton, STILL one of my faves) says to her, “God don’t care what you’re wearin’ long as you show up!”  That line always tickled me because there was a truth behind it.  God (or however you choose to address your higher power/guiding force) doesn’t care as long as you worship/praise in their name.

My mom would more than likely disagree with this one.  See, when I was little, my mom would send me off to church with my neighbors.  I would always get dressed in my Sunday best and she would give me a dollar to put in the offering plate, sometimes two. As I got older, I had stopped going for a long time until my mom at one point felt that I needed to go back and I didn’t have a choice in the matter. No, I wasn’t a juvenile delinquent or anything like that. I had just committed the cardinal sin of “losing my religion” before I was bound to the person I “gave my religion” to…legally. Anyway, at that age, my wardrobe was a bit more lax; but still respectful. Even if I had tried to wear jeans, she’d tell me no and change.  For her it wasn’t about showing out; moreso showing respect to your body and the house of the Lord. After all, if you couldn’t be respectful enough to dress up for your Savior, you must not have respect for self.

Lately, I’ve been missing my mom and little things she made me  do that I didn’t see the point of; one of which was showing up to church in your Sunday best.  So when I saw this dress, it made me think of that line and those moments when I would see all of the churchgoing ladies who get gussied up to simply go to church (or the grocery store or anywhere, really) and chuckled to myself as I put it on, getting ready for my Sunday.

It’s funny the little things are what I miss the most. Things that made no sense that , depending on the day and the level of noise in my head, make more sense now that I’m older.

On the Right Path

2018-03-06_010.png

I saw something a few days ago that made me laugh so hard.  Not because it was just that funny (though it was hilarious).  But because I have been so busy working on my own life, my self, my love of self and more that unlike this thing I saw I didn’t have time to register them on my radar let alone have them so entrenched in my cerebral cortex that I hadn’t moved on with my life.  And it made me remember something I have been saying for a long time to my friends and family: when you are out there working on living (and in so doing living) your best life and learning to love yourself even more with each passing day, you will be too busy to worry about who or what you perceive has wronged you in your past.

You will sweat small petty things less. You will find less to start shit about. You will have less time to perpetuate bullshit. You will be so busy laughing, smiling, moving forward and growing as a person that when old bullshit comes to rear its ugly head you may shake your head for a hot second; but in the end you will laugh at how you may not have even been thinking about/sweating some things while those entities that are…are stuck in the muck and miserable still trying to disrupt you and your happiness.

Living (or trying to live) your best life doesn’t mean that your life is 100% orgasms and ice cream/rainbows and unicorns. It means you’re choosing to do things in life that make you feel good; enhance your overall mental and emotional well-being. You are choosing to remove as much negativity from your existence as possible. You are trying to live a life where you’re in higher spirits, smiling more for yourself and enjoying the little high moments that life can bring to you.

There will be bad times. We all have them. It’s unrealistic to believe that anyone’s journey will leave them without some level of battle scars, including ourselves. You will have those moments where new things (and even some old) will upset you. But once you’re on the path you’re no longer dwelling on things that have happened in your past. You will hopefully be able to work through the new challenges that upset you with a more clear head and clear vision. You are working through the lessons those experiences bring. You are pushing forward, knowing that you don’t have to have those things in your life that constantly bring you down; that you don’t have to react to or retaliate on old shit. That bitterness, that anger…it just breeds more of what you’re trying to remove from your life.

In essence, you living (or working on living) your best life is going to help cure that cancer of negative energy that will eat away at all the good things that can or should be happening to you. You will recognize and focus more on your blessings, no matter the form with which they are delivered to you. Once you are on the path, though you will have moments where you stumble, or lose your way but you will get back up; you will dust yourself off and you’ll find your way back to that path a lot faster than you did before.

Saying Yes

2018-02-27_002.png

I am a people watcher. And in SL, I see more of what I saw IRL among the people here. A lot of us…we are all alike in many ways; especially in how we treat ourselves. It may manifest itself differently from person to person, but the base premise comes from the same place.  And while some revel in it and/or embrace it, some of us torture ourselves with it trying to find a way out…but not always succeeding. I often see so many of us say yes to the wrong things and the wrong people because of our inner struggles of saying yes to ourselves.

So many of us are so quick and able to give the most intimate parts of ourselves to others but then become incredibly stingy and hesitant to give those same gifts to ourselves.  Things like trust, awareness, time, affection, care, love, respect and validation; these are all things we tend to give in hopes of receiving them from others but are so quick to deny ourselves. We rationalize how if we have this person or that person or any person in our lives that we can only then be happy/feel complete/be whole.

But in the same vain, we’re also a people that will uplift and try to instill those same values in our friends who may be suffering as we are in hopes that they too don’t fall into that same pit we live in.  Not because we don’t want to be alone; but because we don’t always feel worthy of the things we give so freely to anyone else.

We say we don’t, but we do.  How do I know this? Because when a relationship of any kind (romantic/platonic/familial…you name it) ends, we always go down the list of all the things we did for that person, stating that they didn’t do the same for us. But do we ever stop and say, “maybe if I had recognized that I deserved all these things in the first place, I wouldn’t have allowed for this to happen to me?”  Probably not. And that’s where the say yes journey should begin.

And I don’t say this to sound like a jerk or bitter or anything that denotes anything other than reality.  We have to treat ourselves better. We have to look into ourselves and figure out who we are, what we want from ourselves and what we want FOR ourselves before we can inflict those expectations on someone else. We have to know who we are and what we really want so we know what we are willing to accept and put up with; what we truly deserve: happiness and fulfillment.  But it starts with looking at yourself honestly and starting to really strip away the layers to get to your inner emotional meatiness and then working on figuring out the rest.

I’ve been on this journey for a while now; learning more about who I am, what I like, what I don’t like, what I want, what I deserve and just what I’m willing to put up with in order to achieve it.  It’s been a hard journey and it gets lonely at times.  But by saying yes to myself, vowing to myself to view myself better and love myself better, I’ve been able to say yes to myself more instead of saying it to the wrong people, situations, ideas or things.

Just a little food for thought on this Wednesday afternoon.

Feeling It

Feeling It

Nothing feels like that first note, that moment when the music just reaches inside of you and touches the deepest parts of who you are.  It engulfs you. And almost like a tiny bomb, explodes deep down filling you with this sensation that warms you all over until you lose yourself in the beat.  Damn…it just feels good. *cranks the music and loses herself*
