After meeting Ms. Byrd and spending a few days speaking with, dining with, gambling with, and watching her base jump, the good Senator invited her to join him in Washington sometime.
After she rebuffed his invitation and frankly stated, “I just can’t seem to get past that big, flashing ‘For Sale’ sign on your forehead,” he recalled the night he first noticed her.
Watching her descend the elegant staircase, he immediately was attracted to the enigmatic presence before him. Continuing with his flashback, he watched himself rise from the table, traverse the distance between them, and offer his hand to escort her to where she was going. In the moment he noticed her, time stood still and instead of embracing the moment, he missed it completely. “How did I let this pass me by?” he asked himself, the afterthought and rebuff both acting as the swift kick he needed to realize how it all should have gone down…and how the outcome may have been different if he had simply moved a little more boldly with his attraction to her instead of staying stuck behind a table, focusing more on the other fruitless transaction at hand.
